Homeowner insurance is designed to protect your dwelling and personal possessions against many types of damage and loss. It does not cover your house only, but also covers you for losses in the following areas: Other buildings on your property, such as a garage, barn, or storage shed. Personal property, whether you are at home or traveling. Additional living expenses, for instance, the cost of living in a motel temporarily if a disaster should render your house uninhabitable. Personal Liability against claims for other people's injury or damage to their property, and also coverage for medical expenses for injuries on or off your property. Losses and damages are not always foreseeable, but you should check to make sure that you are protected against weather-related damages and losses that are common in your area--ice, snow and windstorm damage are frequent in New York State! Also, note that damage caused by flooding is not automatically covered in a homeowner policy. Special forms are available to increase the amount of coverage on personal property such as valuable silverware, jewelry, and art collections. Please contact us if you have any questions about the adequacy of your coverage in this area. Insurance companies often give discounts on homeowner policies if your home is equipped with fire alarms and extinguishers, deadbolt locks, and other anti-theft devices. |
